It’s fight week. Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal will rematch for the welterweight title this Saturday, April 24th. The Usman vs Masvidal rematch is set to headline UFC 261, which will take place in Jacksonville, Florida in front of a full capacity of fans at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. This will be the first full capacity crowd for a UFC event in more than a year. The last Usman vs Masvidal fight at UFC 251 did big numbers, so it’s no surprise the UFC wanted to book the rematch to headline this big UFC 261 event.
Masvidal had a massive 2019 with finishes of Darren Till, Ben Askren and Nate Diaz, becoming one of the biggest names in the UFC over the course of that year. He leveraged that success into his first title shot against Kamaru Usman, but was defeated easily via unanimous decision. Masvidal has not fought since that fight, instead banking on the fact his newfound stardom will ensure a rematch. This waiting paid off for Masvidal with the UFC booking the rematch just under one year after the initial fight. Kamaru Usman stayed active defeating Gilbert Burns by TKO at UFC 258 in February, so he will be back defending his title on a quick turnaround just two months after that win. Usman is now 13-0 in his UFC career and will be a big favorite in this rematch with Masvidal.
UFC 261 is stacked with two other title fights (Shevchenko vs Andrade and Weili vs Namajunas) and it can be considered a flagship event fore the UFC in 2021.
